* Your existing install is corrupted and you want to continue working, but with a clean install.
* You are encountering strange behavior that other's aren't seeing with their installs.
* There is no direct upgrade path between your current version (e.g. 4.1.1) and the new version you want to try (e.g. 5.5.1)
There are other reasons to perform clean installs but these are the most popular, especially with buggy behavior or corrupted installs. The steps below will guide you on how to perform the new install as easily as possible.
Note #1: All your configuration information and project information is stored in your <workspace dir> not in your MyEclipse install. So installing a new version of MyEclipse won't require you to reconfigure everything as long as you reopen your existing install.
Note #2: Any plugins that were added after MyEclipse was installed, will need to be readded after the new installation is done, but their preferences will be maintained in the workspace and carried across once the plugin has been reinstalled.
The steps to creating a new clean install are as follows:
1. Download the version of MyEclipse you wish to use. For platforms that offer an "All in One" installer, we highly suggest that you grab that installer for your platform. The "All in One" installers include the JRE, Eclipse and MyEclipse components all preconfigured to work together in the most stable/optimized manner. If you have to download the plugin installer or manual installer, that is fine as well, just make sure to use the correct JRE and Eclipse platform when installing them.
2. After the download is done, install MyEclipse. Always make sure to install to a brand new directory. Never install MyEclipse ontop of an existing MyEclipse or Eclipse install, you will corrupt your installation.
3. If you used the All in One installer in Step #2, you are done. Go ahead and launch MyEclipse and select your existing workspace to open it and continue working. If you used the Plugin Installer, you should also be done by launching your existing Eclipse install or the new shortcut created for you to start up MyEclipse. If you are using the Manual Install, be sure to follow the instructions included inside the ZIP file.
After you are done with the installation, if problems persist there are still 2 more things to try:
1. Don't forget to try restarting using -clean to clean your workspace's state, as outlined here.
2. If the above didn't work, you may need to create a new workspace, as outlined here.
