MyEclipse: Eclipse 3.1M6

Post subject: Eclipse 3.1M6
Ok, I'm back. I was quiet on support not being available for 3.1M5a mainly because I was in the middle of a release cycle and because I had the good fortune to meet some of you all at EclipseCon and knew how hard ME was working on the next release. But seriously, ME needs to provide a 3.1M6 deliverable or I'm going to have to move my team off it. I'm not trying nor wanting to do it maliciously, just that our next project will be Java 5+ and we need the java support in 3.1M6.

Sadly because I met you all, I can no longer hide behind my user id, and say things with impunity (damn, there goes the good old days), then again you all can't hide from me either. I know where the office is and Wayne gave me his cell # and I'm not afraid to use it. :))

Now give me what I need so I can go back to spreading the ME gospel, please and thank you.

Now that the Eclipse API's are "frozen", we'll provide an M6 beta version when we release MyEclipse 4.0 toward the end of April as part of our normal release cycle. Thanks for hanging in a few more weeks.

ooo.. sounds exciting ! is there a (semi) frozen feature set that you can publish for ME4 ?

Sorry, but it's a secret. :-)

Ok, I'll talk. We're targeting WYSIWYG JSP design, UML, visual hibernate tooling, and some JSF and Tapestry support. Plus some smaller stuff.

Scott,

How much will the UML feature be like what Microsoft is going to have in the next release of Visual Studio? "The Visual Studio Class Designer lets you visualize the structure of classes and their relationships, create new classes using a visual design environment, and easily refactor classes."

I don't know really what they're up to. We'll have UML drawing and some forward and reverse engineering of code.

Sorry, that one is Windows-only in this release due to the technologies we had to use in order to deliver it in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Spring? You guys still want that? I thought everyone wanted Tapestry now. ;-)
Seriously though, we're working on both for 4.0.

Scott, I think you need to quickly release versions for 3.1M6 and each milestones from here on without any new features. ME 4.0 is not really on anyone's MUST GET list but 3.1 and Java 5 are. Otherwise, enough people will start looking elsewhere, taking much of the momentum out of ME.

Don,

We hear you (and everyone else :-)! Actually, we've got someone looking at M6 compatibility for a 3.8.4 beta release now. With any luck we should get one out the door soon.
support-scott - Apr 07, 2005 - 05:32 PM
Post subject:
I know there's a lot of interest in M6 compatibility, so here's an update:

We've got an M6-compliant build of 3.8.4 in QA right now. We're going through additional builds as bugs are found and fixed, but overall things look really good. At this rate, the build should be available for public download in a few days.

As you know, we basically do what our customers tell us is important and we'll be keeping tightly aligned with the Eclipse 3.1 milestones going forward. Thanks for all the feedback and for keeping us on the right track.

Thank you for the update Scott!

Is it possible to provide weekly status reports on what you guys are working on? Something similar to what the Eclipse team does on the eclipse-dev mailing list?

No problem.

Theoretically, it is. But you have to remember that some of the stuff we work on we like to keep it a secre for awhile so we can surprise our competitors. It's a tough market and our management doesn't like to telegraph what we're doing too early as it gives others time to copy us. That said, at the present time everyone is hunkered down working on MyEclipse 4.0 features: UML, visual Hibernate tools, visual JSP designer, Spring, Tapestry etc. All we value here is delivery, and we're working on doing just that. :-)

Post subject: Just another vote...
I'm new to eclipse. Having been an IntelliJ snob for several years, I'm now at a eclipse based shop and I'm struggling to get along with the tool. As I see it, MyEclipse is just about the only way to get the tool to a comparable level as IntelliJ. The problem is that we are using Java5, so I must use 3.1M5 or higher where there is no MyEclipse support.

So, count this as another vote for getting a M6 compatibility out the door as soon as possible. I'll happily run on an unstable beta, if necessary. In the meantime, I'm moaning everyday to return to IntelliJ -- hopefully, you guys can help me turn that around. :)

The "go ahead" for the M6 release has been given so now it's a matter of uploading to the download site and updating the website to point to the new versions. But, it will definately be today. Thanks again for everyone's patience. Hope you like it.

i think you installed a different version. Eclipse 3.1M6 was released on 01. April 05.

3.1M6 is:

Build id: I20050401-1645

Hmm...
I uninstalled MyEclipse, downloaded the latest Window's version installer named EnterpriseWorkbenchInstaller_030804_3.1M6Beta.exe, and I still get:

Version: 3.8.4
Build id: 200501171200-3.8.4

Any idea?

OK, I found out the problem.
Under preferenence->MyEclipse, it shows the correct version - that is, M6
Under Help->About->MyEclipse, it shows the old version ID.
Please address this in the next reelase.
Thanks for M6 beta.

eclipse -clean (linux)
eclipse.exe -clean (win32)

I'm glad to add to my previous post that the installation file was corrupt/partially downloaded. And it works.
Thank you, the Team :)

All,

I wanted to follow up and let you know that there is a known problem with default preference initialization on certain platforms that we didn't have time to address. For example, in the Database explorer preferences the max lines to return on queries has an incorrect "zero" default. Please review your MyEclipse preferences settings to ensure that they're set to something you like to avoid any issues. Sorry for the inconvenience, but it is a beta. ;-)

We'll get it cleaned up in the next one.

If only Spring-IDE were M6compliant so that I could move to M6.

M4 has some problems with certain refactorings (including file rename leaving open the previous editor window in case it was open with no content).

is ME4.0 going to be based on WTP milestone 4 ?

No, because WTP isn't mature / stable enough for production yet. MyEclipse 5.0 will be based on WTP 1.0, however.

The release looks like it will likely be pushed out past the end up April, and before anyone gets upset, try and remember the 3.8.0 release. I think that release pissed off so many people (and us MOST of all!) that we will never risk anything like that again.

To keep things in perspective, 4.0 both behind the scenes and up front has probably 4x the new code/features 3.8.0 did, so it's beta is going to run long. Then we are going to do public milestones and all that jazz before we tell YOU "it's stable". We are going to make damn sure it is. Please bear with it, it shouldn't be much longer.

Well, to be honest.. 3.8.4 is pretty nice and does almost everything I need. Since you haven't announced (I think) all the features for 4.0 my excitement is muted. Relax, make sure the release is solid and we'll be fine with the existing release.. :)

We appreciate the kind words. Management has notified me that we can't order any "Relax" right now and that it is all on backorder. They said we could expect a shipment of it sometime next year, possibly after our 6.0 release.

+1 Vote for Waiting to the Full Test to be done.

I have to admit that I do check almost every day for news about the release, but definitively is better to have a solid release.

Hi all,

has anyone tried to run the MyEclipse 3.8.4 version for M6 against milestone M7? Did it run, were there any problems?

Will there be a build of MyEclipse for M7, like there was for M6?
