MyEclipse is a collection of plugins built ontop of the Eclipse framework and packaged into what is called an "extension". An extension is a collection of plugins, separated into their own directory, and hooked into your Eclipse install by way of the Eclipse extension mechanism.
Because of the size of MyEclipse (~180 plugins as of Nov, 2005) it wouldn't make sense to ask our users to install so many plugins into their base Eclipse installation. Additionally, but keeping all the MyEclipse plugins separate of the Eclipse install, is it easy to install/update and uninstall MyEclipse without affecting the base Eclipse install. |
