This is the reason for the problem. It looks like you installed MyEclipse and are running it as a user that doesn't have write access to that dir. MyEclipse needs write-access to that dir to install the updates into the plugins folder.

Thanks for the response. I've fixed the permissions, but it still fails. This time the details are "Duplicate Errors" and the log has lots of entries as below. I've tried deleting the hotfix dirs under eclipse/plugins/ and eclipse/features/, but now the QuickUpdate completes in a few secs and still gives the same error. Iguess MyEclipse must record somewhere that it is finished with this update; how do I uninstall it?

Those are mylyn errors, so I'm not sure what is going on with MyEclipse.

Did you have any MyEclipse exceptions in the log after startup? Try and shut down ME, erase the log and fire it back up, it should re-create a new log.

You will have to tell me where the log is. If I go to MyEclipse->Installation Summary-> Installation Details->View Error Log, I get a browser tab with:

file:///home/bcox/source/current/src/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.ui.workbench/log

If I shutdown ME and erase this file, when I do the steps above again, I get the complete log -- including the stuff that was in the file that I erased.

BTW, I successful installed this hotfix on another machine after 1st changing the permissions. It seems that if the Quick Update fails, it doesn't properly cleanup and gets confused if you retry.

Sorry about that, it's located under <workspace dir>\.metadata directory, and is named .log

I erased the .log file and restarted ME. The log is below. It still shows these mylyn errors. Prior to doing this, I erased the ME install dir and reinstalled, changed the permissions and used Quick Update to install this hotfix. It told me it failed, due to "Duplicate Errors", but I think it succeeded as there are dirs under eclipse/features and eclipse/plugins for this hotfix and Quick Update no longer shows it as an option to install when I restart ME.

Hmm not much there... at this point I suppose there are really two choices:
1) Assume the hotfix was installed and keep working
2) Do a complete reinstallation, but be sure to use the Eclipse SDK 3.3 download from eclipse.org

NOTE: From the looks of all the "Has already been installed from..." messages, it looks like you either used the Eclipse J2EE install, or installed Eclipse SDK and pulled down all of WTP, then installed MyEclipse ontop of that. Since MyEclipse is built on WTP and includes it, that's a lot of redundancy. For the most part shouldn't hurt, but can create strange setups/conflicts at times.

I had installed eclipse-java-europa not eclipse-SDK-3.3. I uninstalled eclipse and MyEclipse and reinstalled. 1st time I forgot to change all the permissions and had to reinstall MyEclipse. Now I've successfully installed the hotfix and don't have the mylyn errors. sigh.

Oh good, so everything is working now?
