    Hi,

first of all, let’s do the “annoyed”-part, so we have that done 😉 After doing some research on MyEclipse, I thought it might be the right thing to use for at least some of the projects in my company. So I went downloading it…

What comes first? A license agreement thingy displayed in a small window in a font so small you’re going to need a visit at the doctor’s if you actually read all of it. 😯
Anyway. After accepting it, I get to the download page… but no downloads! Just a note telling me I need to be logged in. Oh great. Thank you very much. Not just that I consider this a pretty customer-unfriendly way of handling things, you could’ve told so *right ahead*, and not at the end of the process 😕

It seems like you’re doing all your best to keep customers away from getting a trial version…

Okay then, got over all of that, and installed MyEclipse. Having problems, I first look into the FAQ… and find lots of topics interesting to me. Or so it seems. After doing a whole lot of clicking, I end up finding out that almost all of those categories are empty. Why the HELL do you set up a link to a content-empty page?? It’s okay to show the topic is planned or whatever, but don’t send me searching through the whole thingy when there’s not really anything around 😡

Okay – now to the “real” problems. I have installed MyEclipse. I’m running Eclipse Version: 2.1.0, Build id: 200303272130. I also run Tomcat 4.1. Before finding my way to MyEclipse, I already installed a couple of plugins, namely:

    – Eclipse JDT
    – Sysdeo Tomcat Plugin
    – SolarEclipse

The projects I’m gonna do are Servlet/JSP stuff.

Having installed MyEclipse into a “MyEclipse” subfolder of the eclipse folder, I do get a “MyEclipse” item in the preferences, just that it’s pretty useless: I can change the preferences for XML and CSS editors, but all other entries are empty. Except the “Subscription” one – that sometimes doesn’t appear at all when I click on it, or it shows an empty page, OR it actually shows the subscription fields. 😕

I tried going somewhere else, specifically the “File Association” preferences in the Workbench part, to get the MyEclipse editor handle JSP files. Unfortunately, I can’t select any MyEclipse editor.

Starting a new project, or changing the perspective, also doesn’t show ANYTHING AT ALL from MyEclipse.

Now, what have I done wrong, and what do I need to do to make it right?

After accepting <the license agreement>, I get to the download page… but no downloads! Just a note telling me I need to be logged in. … you could’ve told so *right ahead*, and not at the end of the process 😕

The main download page, the one with the license agreement on it, is this one:
    http://myeclipseide.org/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=10
If you glance at it even briefly, you should note the paragraph at the top of the page which, in a red font states the following:
“Please note you must be logged in to access the download section.”
We can only put the information on the pages, it’s still up to you to read it. 🙂 As for the font size, it seems quite readable to me using IE. Perhaps it’s a browser issue, which one are you using?

Now, what have I done wrong, and what do I need to do to make it right?

FAQ: I end up finding out that almost all of those categories are empty.

I know. Some top-level categories are empty, some detail ones are, sometimes they all are. I have the same problem with it and will re-mention it to our web guy. It definately needs work.

Now to your problems. They all stem from that fact that you’re using an incomplete version of Eclipse. The fact that you installed Eclipse JDT tells me that you only downloaded the Eclipse platform, initially, not the full Eclipse product distribution. You need all of Eclipse to run MyEclipse, not just the platform + jdt. To correct the problem, go back to our download page (after logging in, of course 😉 and download the version of Eclipse which you will find a link to there. Install it, rerun the MyEclipse installer on it. You don’t need to install any other third party plugins before you install MyEclipse. We already have Tomcat support and have bundled the XML and CSS portions of SolarEclipse. Then, open up the latest documentationlocated at http://myeclipseide.com/enterpriseworkbench/help/index.jsp and walk through the configuration and web tutorials. You should be good to go!

    Hello there,

okay it was my fault about not seeing the sentence at the licence page 😉 , but that, too, was related to the small font problem. By the way, I’m using Opera 6 here. But I’ve just tried with IE, and it’s not difference. I just think such a long text in such a small window with such a small font is HARD to read.. 😉

Thanks for your help with my problem. I didn’t even know the version I have is “incomplete” … what I read on the Eclipse page made me think that was the complete one 😉

I’ll try the way you suggested then. Thanks again!

Truthfully, I seldom read license pages either. The click is just an Pavlovian response at this point. 🙂

long text in such a small window with such a small font is HARD to read.. 😉

That’s because no one really reads it. Actually, you can always copy it out and paste it into something more controllable if you want. It’s really just a basic commercial software license agreement. We’re not trying to get at your kids or anything. 😉

Sometimes it’s tough to tell. The Eclipse org has recently decided to slice and dice Eclipse into various themed releases. It’s a bit of a problem for product companies. That’s why we try to show you which version is the right one from the download page, in case you’re new to Eclipse.

Anyway, welcome and let us know if you run into any other issues.

    Hi Scott,

thanks for the help, it works now – currently printing the documentations to experiment a bit with MyEclipse. At first glance, I’d say MyEclipse is just exactly what I’ve been looking for 🙂

By the way, I noticed a problem with the help system in Opera (it doesn’t actually show you the texts) – but if I recall correctly, it’s part of Eclipse itself, not of MyEclipse, right? Anyway, using IE I had no problems.

    Hello again,

now working with the full Eclipse and MyEclipse as the only plugin, using Tomcat 4.1 as server. I encountered the following problem:

In the project’s context menu, I do have the “Deploy/Undeploy” options; but not in the MyEclipse top menu (this not really being that bad – I can just stick to the context menu).

Is this a bug, or a feature? 😉

It might just be a configuration issue. Navigate to Window->Customize Perspective->Other… and make sure that all the MyEclipse items are selected. This should add the missing menu items.

    Hi,

no, they’re all selected. Dunno.. if noone else ever had this problem, I’d say it’s not worth intense examination. Just thought you might have a quick answer for that 😉

Well, the quick answer is that the toolset is a little different in the upcoming GA release, so it won’t continue to be a problem. 🙂
