    Hi,

I am trying to install MyEclipse and it is crashing. This is a new install of Eclipse, which appears to work fine as a Java IDE. At first I suspected it was due to this version, so I removed files and installed eclipse SDK 2.1.3, followed by MyEclipse 2.7.1, which crashed again. I am a long time user of WSAD on Windows and I’m REALLY looking forward to this new Mac Eclipse environment.

    Jon

    – System Setup ——————————-
Operating System and version: Mac OSX 10.3.3
    Eclipse version: 3.0.0
    Eclipse build id: 200403261517
    Fresh Eclipse install (y/n): y
If not, was it upgraded to its current version using the update manager?
    Other installed external plugins: none
Number of plugins in the <eclipse>/plugins directory that begin with org.eclipse.pde.*: 8
    MyEclipse version: 3.7.2
    Eclipse JDK version: 1.4.2
    Application Server JDK version: 1.4.2
Are there any exceptions in the Eclipse log file? There is no .log file yet.

    Jon,

We had a similar problem reported in the link below, but I don’t know that if we ever found resolution:
    https://www.genuitec.com/forums/topic/installing-2-7-rc2-on-panther-10-3-2/&highlight=excbadaccess

But here’s one that looks the same with a resolution. Can you give it a look?
    https://www.genuitec.com/forums/topic/myeclipse-install-error-on-mac-os-10-3-3-with-m8-closed/&highlight=mac+install

FYI, I found them by using the forum search for Mac and install (both words). Please let us know if this resolves the issue.

    Thanks Scott.

I haven’t improved anything yet. I tried to install MyEclipse after a clean boot. Here’s what else I’ve tried, each independently:

    1. Re-download and install Java 1.4.2.
    2. From Terminal, changing CurrentJVM to 1.3.
    3. From Terminal, changed VMOptions -Xms128m and –Xmx256 on installer properties.
    4. From Terminal, set LAX_DEBUG=1 – I don’t see any debugging – where do I find this?

I Googled AWT2QuartzGetNumberOfInstalledFonts. People have reported crashes on install of OpenOffice and Flash Remoting on this same instruction. I don’t use these.

If you look at forums for KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE, some people have pointed to the handling of this installed fonts method in the code. But for the most part, these are frustrated end users, and I didn’t see much in the way of resolution.

I am somewhat new to the Mac. It feels like some package, library, whatever is not playing well with the rest of the configuration on this machine. There have been the odd crash now and then, just like any other OS, but never a repeatable crash like this. So this is good from this perspective.

I don’t like the thought of not even giving MyEclipse a try. I’m willing to do some legwork, but seems that it could be a very long road ahead to resolve this, depending on who gets involved. I’m 3 hours into this as of now.

    Jon,
Have you installed any custom fonts? Are you in a non-english locale? What version of OS X are you running? Have you tried any Mac support forums?

Also, setting LAX_DEBUG=1 should show the installer output to the console assuming you run the installer from the console afterwards.

I had a quick question, are you having trouble running Eclipse after ME is installed, or are you having trouble running the installer? If its the installer, then you can grab the Manual install from the download section and install ME that way.

    Hi,

Thanks for some ideas. I use English locale, and using OSX 10.3.3. I did searches on several support forums such as macosxhints. I will continue searching and post on a couple Mac support forums.

Yes, I have installed several fonts for some work I did on a web site. I could remove these and see how that goes. Maybe there is a way to just restore font library back to the original. I have heard that fonts can be touchy to manage on a Mac, but wouldn’t have thought it would impact this.

I did set the env variable in the terminal process – output must be directed somewhere I didn’t see.

I will try the manual install. Does this sidestep InstallAnywhere?

Eclipse is fine, it’s ME that won’t install. I’ll get back to you with results.

    Thanks,
    Jon

Ahhhh, if this is an install issue, just download the manual install. Its a zip file that you just unzip somewhere, and then create a link file for Eclipse to find the unzipped location. Its a 2-step process (I prefer it over the InstallAnywhere approach).

Yes it avoids the install anywhere problem in that its just a zip file, nothing to run, just unzip it, and follow the detailed manual install instructions included in the zip file (screenshots and everything) and you should be up and running in under 5mins.

Let us know if you need help.

    Riyad,

The manual install went smoothly and I am up and running. I did not try any of the other changes we discussed simply due to time constraint and this seemed like the most direct course of action. Although I’d prefer to know what caused the InstallAnywhere crash, I’ll let it rest. I suspect that it has something to do with the fonts.

Thank you all for the help!

    Jon 😀

I know how you feel. Maybe someday we’ll get to the bottom of it, or a OS X patch will fix it.

Thank you all for the help!

No problem, I’m glad to hear you are up and running.
