    Here’s my sitch:

    – OS X 10.3.3
    – Eclipse 3.0M8
    – JDK 1.4.2x

I’ve installed Eclipse and it runs just fine. When I’ve tried to run the OS X installer for MyEclipse (Enterprise Workbench Installer), I get to a point at which it asks to find my “Eclipse installation directory” which I select (I’ve tried installating and reinstalling Eclipse in many places, all with the same result: let’s use /Applications/eclipse for the purposes of this posting). I verify (through the shell) that there is, indeed, a .eclipseproduct file present (when I copy the directory over, I use the shell to ensure I’m getting hidden files). When I click “next”, I am confronted with a screen that says:

“MyEclipse Enterprise Workbench v3.7.2 can installed anywhere on your file system and should NOT be installed underneath /Applications/eclipse. In order to avoid any potential conflicts, it is highly recommended that you specify a directory that does not already exist.”

OK, so I’ve done everything at this point from cancel, to going back to try another eclipse directory, to just proceeding. The install seems to finish, creates a MyEclipse directory sister-level with the Eclipse one specified, but when I try to run the IDE it bombs out telling me there are issues with a UI configuration file. Then it leaves a nice process open for Eclipse which appears to be un-killable without a logout/login.

    What am I doing wrong?

Andy, just to clarify, the install will ask you for 2 directories. 1 directory is the Eclipse install itself (it needs to know where Eclipse lives, so it can add a new /links file to it) and the 2nd question is where you want to put MyEclipse. The warning is just telling you not to put MyEclipse under the Eclipse dir because it can cause some headaches.

So with that in mind, I’d say it would be best if you removed all installs of MyEclipse and Eclipse (just clean out everything) and kill off (Backup if necessary…) the workspace dir that is probably in your home directory. Then download Eclipse, unzip it to your own Home dir, then run Eclipse and shut it down (let it finish the install process), then run the MyEclipse installer, point it at your Eclipse dir in your Home dir and then install MyEclipse to your Home dir as well. Now fire up Eclipse again, everything should be hunky dorey. If not, open up your log file and paste the error here for us to look at.

If you would like a hyper-detailed blow-by-blow for (re)installing Eclipse/MyEclipse on a Windows setup (please translate for your platform) check this FAQ entry out: http://www.myeclipseide.com/FAQ+index-myfaq-yes-id_cat-4.html#156

OK, I’ve done that. Seemed to go just fine.

Now when I launch Eclipse, I get an error: “Unable to read workbench state. Workbench UI layout will be reset.”

After that, the application is deader-than-disco. I typically have to logout to kill it. Any further ideas?

    All right, I’m working.

For reference, I reinstalled everything, then dusted the <eclipse-home>/configuration and /workspace directories before launching MyEclipse. That seemed to do it.

    Thanks!

Eclipse 3.0M8 had a real nasty problem with caching bad configurations. You’ll need to delete your <eclipse-install>/configuration folder as well as the <workbench>/.metadata/.config folder if it exists and restart.

However, what I’d highly encourage you to do is download Eclipse 3.0 M9 or RC 1 and use the 3.8 Beta 1 release we just uploaded to the server. M9/RC1 are both MUCH more stable than M8 and shouldn’t cause you any installation issues.
