Default Locations for MyEclipse Installations

Read on, if you want to know where to look for MyEclipse related directories and files. This post assumes that you've accepted the default locations when installing Pulse and/or MyEclipse, in three different installation scenarios: installing from a separate offline or online installer (without Pulse having been installed), installing through Pulse, and installing from a separate installer but with Pulse already installed. There are other possibilities, installing using an update site from a classic eclipse install or installing using the Secure Delivery Center product; those cases aren't covered here though, in those cases, the installation folder structure ends up being not much different from a base eclipse install (see, also, the second post).

The string, "<user name>" refers to the ID that is used to log into the system. The string " <install base>" refers to the directory or folder under which the components of pulse and/or MyEclipse are installed. The string "<MyEclipse install folder>" refers to the folder from which MyEclipse is executed.

The final name of the <MyEclipse install folder> depends on the edition of MyEclipse that you install. For the sake of simplicity, the example "MyEclipse 9" is used here.

Some files may have a slightly different name, depending on the edition of MyEclipse that you install. For example, with MyEclipse for Spring, instead of myeclipse.ini, you will see myeclipseforspring.ini.

Windows 7 and Windows Vista

If Pulse is not installed and MyEclipse is installed using a separate installer, the <install base> will be C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\MyEclipse, which will contain a Common sub-folder and the <MyEclipse install folder> will be <install base>\MyEclipse 9.

Installing Pulse, with the defaults, will create an <install base> of C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Genuitec. Pulse, itself, will be installed in a sub-folder of Pulse Explorer and a sub-folder of Common is created to hold MyEclipse common code.

If Pulse is used to then install MyEclipse, the <MyEclipse install folder> will be <install base>\Profiles\MyEclipse 9.

If, after installing Pulse, a separate installer is used to install MyEclipse outside of Pulse, the <MyEclipse install folder> will be <install base>\MyEclipse 9.

Some other files and folders will be created in default locations (though some can't be changed).
The .myeclipse folder, the .myeclipse.properties file and the .pulse2.locator file will all be in C:\Users\<user name>. The myeclipse.ini file will be in <MyEclipse install folder>.

Workspaces, by default, are in C:\Users\<user name>\Workspaces and, for MyEclipse 9, the default workspace sub-folder will be MyEclipse 9.

Windows XP

If Pulse is not installed and MyEclipse is installed using a separate installer, the <install base> will be C:\Program Files\MyEclipse, which will contain a Common sub-folder and the <MyEclipse install folder> will be <install base>\MyEclipse 9.

Installing Pulse, with the defaults, will create an <install base> of C:\Program Files\Genuitec.

The .myeclipse folder, the .myeclipse.properties file and the .pulse2.locator file will all be in C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>. The myeclipse.ini file will be in <MyEclipse install folder>.

Workspaces, by default, are in C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Workspaces and, for MyEclipse 9, the default workspace sub-folder will be MyEclipse 9.

Linux

If Pulse is not installed and MyEclipse is installed using a separate installer, the <install base> will be /home/<user name>/MyEclipse, which will contain a Common sub-folder and the <MyEclipse install folder> will be <install base>/MyEclipse 9.

Installing Pulse, with the defaults, will create an <install base> of /home/<user name>/Genuitec. Pulse, itself, will be installed in a sub-folder of Pulse Explorer and a sub-folder of Common is created to hold MyEclipse common code.

If Pulse is used to then install MyEclipse, the <MyEclipse install folder> will be <install base>/Profiles/MyEclipse 9.

If, after installing Pulse, a separate installer is used to install MyEclipse outside of Pulse, the <MyEclipse install folder> will be <install base>/MyEclipse 9.

Some other files and folders will be created in default locations (though some can't be changed).
The .myeclipse folder, the .myeclipse.properties file and the .pulse2.locator file will all be in /home/<user name>. The myeclipse.ini file will be in <MyEclipse install folder>.

Workspaces, by default, are in /home/<user name>/Workspaces and, for MyEclipse 9, the default workspace sub-folder will be MyEclipse 9.

Mac OS X

If Pulse is not installed and MyEclipse is installed using a separate installer, the <install base> will be /Applications/MyEclipse, which will contain a Common sub-folder and the <MyEclipse install folder>, an application, will be <install base>/MyEclipse 9.

Installing Pulse, with the defaults, will create an <install base> of /Applications/Genuitec. Pulse, itself, will be installed in an application of Pulse Explorer and a sub-folder of Common is created to hold MyEclipse common code.

If MyEclipse is then installed either through Pulse or using a separate installer, the <MyEclipse install folder>, an application, will be <install base>/MyEclipse 9.

Some other files and folders will be created in default locations (though some can't be changed).
The .myeclipse folder, the .myeclipse.properties file and the .pulse2.locator file will all be in /Users/<user name>. The myeclipse.ini file will be in <install base>/MyEclipse 9.app/Contents/Profile/myeclipse.app/Contents/MacOS. Note that when using Finder to locate the files (as opposed to a terminal, for example), the "MyEclipse 9.app" folder will appear as just "MyEclipse 9", if extensions are hidden. Also, Finder will recognize the folder as an application, so double-clicking will just start the application; you have to right click on the folder and select "Show Package Contents" and also for the myeclipse.app folder in the path.

Workspaces, by default, are in /Users/<user name>/Workspaces and, for MyEclipse 9, the default workspace sub-folder will be MyEclipse 9.

With the release of MyEclipse 2013, you will find that there are some differences in the file structure and in some of the ancillary files. We hope to document those changes fully, here. For now, be aware that there is a simpler directory structure, which is similar to the structure found for a classic eclipse distribution installation. There is no Common folder, with all files and sub-folders being under a single installation folder.

For example, the default location for a MyEclipse Professional installation on Windows 7 is C:\Users\<yourName>\AppData\Local\MyEclipse Professional. The executable is directly in this folder, along with the myeclipse.ini file.

There is no .pulse2.locator file in your home folder, but you will see a new file, .deliverycenter.installs, which contains the installation location of MyEclipse 2013 releases or those installations through the Secure Delivery Center.
