    Hi,

when is MyEclipse 11 coming, and which Eclipse version is it going to be based on? 3.8 or 3.8.1?

Also, what new features are going to be in it? 🙂

    Thanks and best regards,

    Robert

    Robert,

The roadmap page should keep you informed of what will be there and when to expect it.

    Hi Tony,

still, would you care to elaborate a bit? 🙂

Q4 seems to be quite non-specific, considering that both 10.7 and 11 are both scheduled for Q4 (now that 11 has been postponed from Q3 which I am certain it was indicated to be scheduled for according to the roadmap when I posted the question).

Also, what Eclipse updates will 10.7 have?

Finally, what does ‘more to come’ cover? 🙂

    Thanks and best regards,

    Robert

    Rob,

I’ll make sure we add more details to the roadmap.

10.7 the 10.7 release is about a few important bug fixes in deployment, code generation and Maven areas. We are keeping this release tight and are not planning any larger changes at this time. Is there anything specific you are interested in?

MyEclipse 11 will be based on Juno SR1, and we are going with the 3.8.1 release, not 4.2.1 due to the significant number of performance problems with the latter.

While we’re not going to be adding new features – you’re going to benefit from better container support – customize containers at the project level, better upgrade processes for libraries. Containers may also change their contents based on the “capabilities” you have added to your project.

We’re also adding a “target platform” concept, setting the stage for you to develop applications that are targeted to specific servers (if you wish) – containers may adjust their contents accordingly. For example, if a server already provides XYZ libraries, the container which would ordinarily contain a copy (or another version) of those libraries will exclude them. Everything is configurable of course.

The changes in 11.0 will set the stage for significantly more control, stability and reliability in areas like deployment, which are to immediately follow in subsequent releases.

Finally, we are moving to a new distribution/update model that will be similar to what exists in Eclipse. We’ll provide more details on this later.

This sounds interesting… will this also be documented with some examples so that we may grasp the full range of possibilities this will allow?

You might want to make sure that it will still remain possible to have a copy of a library both in the platform container AND also one within the deployment unit, for resolving possible classloader issues. To make this seamless to the utmost, you may want the platform implementations to provide information on what kind of resolution order the platform provided classloaders have for the deployment unit (e.g. web containers resolve most of the classes from their own jars except for java.* and javax.*) as this may or make such “duplicate jars to override parent library” approach working or not.

    Thanks and best regards,

    Robert

    Hi,

is there some more accurate news about when 10.7 and 11 are coming?

I somehow doubt that both of them would be released in 2012Q4.

    Thanks and best regards,

    Robert

    Robert,

10.7 is imminent. 11 is being worked on in parallel and we still plan to release it this quarter. We can’t give exact dates, unfortunately.

    Rob,

Unfortunately we’ve hit a few unavoidable delays with MyEclipse 11 and it will only be available late Jan or early Feb. We are continuing with bug fix and minor feature releases in the 10,.x stream.

If you are interested in a pre-release version, I can make one available for you to test – your feedback would be appreciated.

I’m developing with Eclipse RCP 4.2.1 myeclipse because the Eclipse version 4.x supports it yet. Therefore, I have in June, my subscription is not renewed after many years. Now I’ve been waiting for months for an appropriate version for e4.

    Hi Brian,

is it still true that MyEclipse 11 is not going to support Eclipse 4.2 or 4.2.1 when it will be released in let’s say February? How long might it take for a release with Eclipse 4.2.x support?

    Thanks.

    jukefox,

Yes, this is still true. Our official 4.x releases will only be post the first release of 11.0. The performance problems still exist and our internal development and testing is based on 3.8.x.

Note that it may be possible to install 11.0 on 4.x via the update site (archived or live) – there is only one dependency that currently prevents this which we will try to sort out before the release. However, for stability and performance reasons, the installers will all be 3.8.x based.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

For the .1 release of 11 (or even before) can you really check out this “plugin”.
I believe the heavy lifting of integrating Forge into Eclipse has been done already and it may just pass first time which would be a real coup!
