    josephjmarini,

Yes, Matisse4MyEclipse is removed from MyEclipse 2014 in favor of Window Builder (called “Swing Designer for MyEclipse” in our product component)

Take a look at these threads for more information on why Matisse4MyEclipse support is removed and how you can work with the Window Builder :

    Joseph,

Just to follow up – we did mention in our release notes for past versions that Matisse would be retired in the 2014 release; as mentioned by Swapna, this is in favour of the Window Builder tools which are significantly better than the ageing functionality provide by Matisse.

To continue to use Matisse, you can use 2013 or prior versions.

This is a very bad move. In no way can I rely on MyEclipse 2014’s Window Builder when the first swing class I open comes up with

“Windowbuilder was not able to show the GUI. Please read the description below and look bug tracking system or discussion group for more information. Press “Create Report…” button …”

Matisse worked. And I can’t check if Windowbuilder works with our 100s of form files / Java classes.

MyEclipse 2014 has become unusable / not an option. Please bring back Matisse. Thank you.

Edit: I’m really trying to at least get WindowBuilder to partially work, but I get from one error to another, including this:

    “Internal Error
    WindowBuilder encountered unexpected internal error.

This could be caused by a WindowBuilder bug or by a misconfiguration issue, conflict, partial update, etc.”

The reason why we chose to upgrade MyEclipse was that we don’t want to be stuck with an outdated version of Eclipse anymore. Matisse is one of the main reasons why we chose MyEclipse for our developers. Please reconsider the integration of Matisse. WindowBuilder is not an option for existing projects, it doesn’t work. At least not in a backwards compatible way.

    Lofi,

I’m sorry to hear about your abysmal experience. From our testing, Window Builder works fine, but I do understand how a replacement for “but it [Matisse] just worked” would be like.

I’ll take this up with our strategy team and keep you posted.

    Hello Brian,

thank you very much for your reply. Regarding strategy: I’m lead architect at my company and I’m also responsible for the development tools which we use. An annual subscription of MyEclipse has been the best option for me and my team for years. We could have always switched to different tools, but the price of MyEclipse and its functionality just didn’t make us think of anything else.

We developed hundreds of forms with MyEclipse. Matisse was the main benefit for us when we used MyEclipse. Now that this benefit is gone and backwards compatibility isn’t given, we may as well switch to other tools, there would be no real need for us to use MyEclipse anymore. If we have to rewrite code to make our product work with MyEclipse, we may do it with free tools as well.

Window Builder may work fine if you create new forms. It doesn’t with existing Matisse forms. E. g. Matisse used the no-args constructor by default, even though there is none. Our forms don’t have that, they use a parametrized constructor. Window Builder thinks it’s so intelligent that it has to use the parametrized constructor, but all it finds is of course a non-initialized parameter and that of course leads to a nullpointer exception when we open the forms with Window Builder. That’s just one example of my findings when using Window Builder.

In short: it doesn’t work in a way that it covers all bases. I don’t mind using Window Builder (even with its very slow parsing which costs a minute per form opening), but then it should work a 100% before you remove the working existing solution, i. e. Matisse. And having all our developers go through these artificially created problems costs a lot of time and money, which is not an option.

Thank you very much for your consideration.

    Regards
    Lofi

    Lofi,

Thank you for the detailed thoughts on Matisse and your use of MyEclipse, they certainly helped with our decision.

We are working towards making an install via update site available over the next couple of days – unfortunately Matisse has a few minor issues when it comes to working in the Kepler / e4 UI and simply reusing the existing code as is, is not an option.

In subsequent releases of 2014, Matisse will go back to being an optionally installable component that you can install from the choose components dialog.

Q: What was the last version of MyEclipse that your team was using?

    Hello Brian,

thank you very much, that sounds great. For Java development we’re using mostly 8.6. The guys which do Java and C use 10 and 2013. That’s because of the x64 development. But it’s a bit messy for them to have different project settings and configurations compared to the others. Now that Oracle ended the support for Java 6 we want to lift everything and everyone to the latest version of MyEclipse and in that matter also regarding Java and other tools. There’s a lot of work involved, the non-availability of Matisse was a blocker.

By the way, thank you very much for dropping Pulse the way it was. My favorite version of MyEclipse was MyEclipse 6 where you could just copy/paste the installed environment and had the team up and running within a short amount of time.

    Regards
    Lofi

Any news on this beeing available? Anxiously waiting for this. My government client have hundreds of forms built with Matisse. I guess my client should never have tied themselves to a WYSIWYG tools. It’s more time consuming to do things by hand by safer in the long run.

I awaiting to give recommendation by close of day today since their licenses are renewable the 19th of January and we need to make a decision to move to another tool. Hopefully I can give them good news.

    malinc,

As Brian mentioned above, “In subsequent releases of 2014, Matisse will go back to being an optionally installable component that you can install from the choose components dialog.”

I’m afraid that we don’t have a definitive schedule for releases but maintenance releases tend to come out every few months. Of course, previous releases can always be installed to get this functionality.

Is it a couple of days now or is it months? Because if it’s months, I can stop testing the other features of MyEclipse 2014 right now and evaluate again later.

    Lofi,

When took a second pass at Matisse with Kepler, we found many more issues than initially anticipated – this is because Matisse was never really tested with this release. My team is working on fixing them and so we are beyond the “couple of days” that I initially expected it to take; apologies for not providing feedback earlier.

I do intend to make the update site available as soon as possible (likely this week) with all the fixes in place. This will be available for addition into the existing version of 2014.

If interested, PM me your email address (or respond here) and I can send you a private copy of the integration as it exists right now – you could use that for immediate evaluation, before the update site is publicly available.

Thank you Brian, the MyEclipse team support is very appreciated. It’s understandable that effort needs to be put into the integration of Matisse into MyEclipse and that it takes time. I rather wait and have everything working. But if you need a tester, I’d be happy to do so after the holidays.

Well thanks i’ve forwarded your thoughts to our management and they decided to drop using MyEclipse. I guess at higher levels they were already looking at cutting costs and however small your cost is they jumped on following other teams that are using Eclipse.

Thanks for your support since 2005. Hopefully they decide to go back to your products in the future.

    Thanks.

Please check the following topic for details on how Matisse can be re-added to MyEclipse. https://www.genuitec.com/forums/topic/myeclipse-2014-and-matisse/

As detailed in the above post, we will be reintroducing it formally in our next maintenance release.

Lofi, do let me know how it works for you.

malinc, sorry to hear about your management’s decision – we could have done a better job of announcing the deprecation, beyond just the release notes and perhaps we could have avoided axing it in the first place. Do let us know if there is anything else you need or if you have any other feedback, being a long-time MyEclipse user.
