As the topic says, I have a Java 7 installed, but the CI installer requests Java6 – why?

    GNaschenweng,

I’m sorry you’re seeing this issue. It’s not something that I’ve been able to replicate, even though I have Java 7 on the same version of OSX (though not quite as up to date as yours). However, this has been seen on a colleague’s machine but we’ve been unable to track down the cause. Certainly, Java on the Mac has been problematic for many people and there may be some artefact left lying around in the operating system from upgrades as new releases have come out. I have a fairly clean install of OSX 10.9, which hasn’t been upgraded to a new release (other than updates to the current release), which may account for the fact that I didn’t see the problem.

We certainly don’t require Java 6, specifically, for our installer or to run the IDE; Java 7 should be fine, too.

Is it possible for you to just go ahead and let the system install Java 6? I realise that might not be ideal but could be the only way out, here. Sorry for the inconvenience.

As Tony stated above, you shouldn’t be seeing this. If you do go ahead and install, MyEclipse should use Java 7 to run. Could you let us know?

I will also be asking someone from our installer team to take a look.

My Mac is a new installation (on a 15″ Retina MacBook Pro) with 10.9.3 and JDK build 1.7.0_60-b19. I had to agree to install Java6 from Apple before your installer would function. I have seen similar issues with other installers and for example CharlesProxy provides a differently packaged version which will just work without the Apple Java1.6 dependency.

From the looks of it, this seems to depend on how Eclipse is bundled/packaged. (I did not have this issue with Android Studio or Momentics).

I have an update from development on this front: Our installer is a 32-bit application and Java 7 on OS X is 64-bit only, so we do need Java 6 for the installer to run and what happened in your case is actually explicable when the system does not have Java 6.

So the Java 6 constraint is just so you can run the installer, MyEclipse itself will run Java 7.

I agree that this not a good install experience and our installer team is looking into improvements in this area.

    Thank you for writing in.

Ah – thank you – good to know that I was not going crazy. Are there any plans of releasing a full CI installer (it’s a bit cumbersome redownloading everything when reinstalling)?

We are considering creating a full offline installer based on user feedback.

We’re trying to understand usage patterns as well and providing only an online installer would work fine if you only needed to install MyEclipse once, which should be the case. Can you tell me why you need to reinstall MyEclipse?

With MyEclipse 2014 I had cases where during usage something went wrong and I had to reinstall. Now with MyEclipse 2015 we would need to image all developers machines and an offline installer would be quicker.

You will be happy to know that we just released 2015 CI 2 with offline installers. Head on to our download page to pick up an installer if you need one, though you can always update within product as well (it should be a 100 MB update).

Thank you for sharing your experience and needs with us.
