when i shutdown my Tomcat server via the IDE, sometimes whole my pc is shutdown and restarted. Any idea what might be the cause of this very irritating behavior ??

No idea. The command simply sends a Tomcat-specific command to the remote JVM that’s executing Tomcat. The only thing I can think of that could cause what you’re describing is an OS crash of some type. Can you please post all the information we request in the Posting Guidelines thread at the top of this forum? That will give us some context to work with.

Thanks for the quick reply, here are the answers on the guidelines.

What operating system and version are you running?
Windows 2000 5.00.2195 SP3

What Eclipse version and build id are you using? (Help > About Eclipse Platform)
version: 2.1.3 & build id: 200403101828
– Was Eclipse freshly installed for MyEclipse? yes
– If not, was it upgraded to its current version using the update manager?
– Are any other external plugins installed? no
– How many plugins in the <eclipse>/plugins directory are like org.eclipse.pde.* 7

What MyEclipse version are you using? (Help > About Eclipse Platform > Features)
2.7.1

What JDK version are you using to run Eclipse? (java -version)
JDK1.4.2_05

What JDK version are you using to launch your application server?
JDK1.4.2_05

What steps did you take that resulted in the issue?

– I start Tomcat 5 via the IDE
– I do some things (sometimes completely nothing° with the web-app
– I stop Tomcat 5 via the IDE and also my pc is shutting down.

None of my collegues experienced this behavior. And i do have it sometimes several times after each other and then for a period of some days not anymore and then there it’s again. So it’s really annoying.

What application server are you using?
Tomcat 5

Are there any exceptions in the Eclipse log file? (<workspace>/.metadata/.log)
no

hysterio,
How are you shutting down Tomcat (what exact steps do you take?) Also does your computer go through a clean shut down (do you see your task bar items close out, see the “Saving settings…” dialog, see the screen change from your desktop to the login screen, and then say “Shutting down”, or does it all blank out immediately like a blue-screen following by an immediate restart?)

I would HIGHLY encourage you to:
1) Navigate to your Control Panel > System > Advanced (tab) > (Startup and Recovery) Settings > Uncheck “Automatically Restart”, this will letyou know if you are blue screening or not without rebooting too fast.
2) Download and install Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware spyware remover: http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5, and run it.
3) Update your virus scanner and scan your computer (this is IMPORTANT)

There was a virus going around about 8 months ago that just reboots your computer, a few coworkers of mine got it and were loosing their minds, they all thought it was faulty hardware.

I’m asking you to check these things out because shutting down Tomcat is so far removed and should be impossible/gaurded by Windows to do from a JVM which is what Eclipse/MyEclispe/Tomcat all run in… also if this keeps happening please try a fresh reinstall of Tomcat. There might be something about that setup that is pissing off your computer.

I just go to MyEclipse, click on the “Run/Stop Server” button in the toolbar, choose “Tomcat 5” and then click on “Stop”.

No, screen is going immediate black and following screen that i see is the one with the name of the supplier of the pc, giving me some seconds to enter BIOS etc.

I did uncheck the “Automatically Restart” (because this behavior is not with each time i stop server from running, i can’t tell you if i got now a blue screen or not. But i will certainly let you know when it happens again.

Now my pc is being scanned by Ad-Aware and also scanning on viruses with up-to-date virusscanner (McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 7.1.0)

I did uninstall & install Tomcat already a few times, because i tought it was caused by some failure during install, but still got the problem.

We don’t have an “Automatically Restart” option anywhere in MyEclipse. I assume that this is contributed by some other plugin that you have installed in addition to MyEclipse. I’d recommend a clean install of Eclipse and only MyEclipse to see if this clears up the issue, after you complete all the scans.

This is an option of the Windows OS and was proposed to me by another member of the support (see post of support-rkalla).

The problem with this one is that it doesn’t occur every time, so it’s very difficult to tell if everything is cleared up.

I do notice that if i do first a deploy of my web-app and close MyExlipse and restart it, that i have mostly no problems at all. So maybe this is handy to point the cause of the problem

hysterio,
Your computer is essentially bluescreening due to shutting down Tomcat, certainly not something that I would consider to be good… after the virus and ad-aware scans are complete be sure to upgrade your graphics drivers for your video card to the latest. ATI had a problem with blue screening Windows when using Swing on machines with outdated drivers… I sincerely doubt that is the problem in this case because nothing graphical is happening, but it can’t hurt to try and fix as much of this situation as we can.

Today i had again the problem, but now pc gave a blue screen, something with a physical memory dump. But besides that one occurence, i didn’t experience it anymore.

I would encourage you to download memtest86 and let it run over night OR install Seti@Home and let it run over night and see if your computer bluescreens… it sounds like this could either be:
a) faulty CPU (extremely doubtful, I’ve only had this happen once in my life)
b) mobo issue (possible… but rare)
c) memory issue (more possible)
d) mobo/system driver issue (most likely)
e) PSU issue under heavy load (very possible, PIA to trouble shoot without a voltmeter)

At the least running memtest or seti should help you figure out if its a “bluescreen during heavy load” issue or not.

I did have it again and looked a little bit closer to the blue screen and noticed that the ati3d1ag.dll is always cause of the problem.

Ahhhhh, maybe it is the ATI driver problem I was talking about. The workaround is to disable d3d acceleration, the fix is to update your ATI driver: http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html
